7 Car Sounds You Should Never Ignore

Some noise is expected as you cruise around in your car. However, there are some car sounds that indicate a deeper problem with your vehicle, especially since cars today are designed to be quieter than their predecessors. Given that cars are an expensive asset, you should not ignore these sounds or they could incur costly repair and replacement costs later on.

Here are 7 car sounds you should keep an ear out for.

  1. Squealing

If you notice a squealing or chirping sound every time you step on the accelerator, this could mean that your engine belt is either loose or slipping. Most cars just have one belt, so without it, you could be stranded. This is why it is important that you get timely help.

  2.  Hissing

If you hear a hissing sound, this would generally signal towards a leak. You should take your car to a mechanic who would then be able to tell whether there’s a leak in the cooling system or the vacuum system of your vehicle. Leaks should not go unnoticed as they will affect your engine’s performance.

  3.  Knocking

If you notice any knocking or banging noise coming from your car, this could mean a low level of fluids in your engine or a deeper, more concerning problem with your rod bearings. For the latter, you may even need to get a new engine. This is why you should immediately get professional assistance.

  4. Grinding

Grinding or humming noises indicate worn out parts. If you hear these noises, there may be an issue with your clutch, synchronizer or transmission that should be checked as soon as possible. If the grinding noise appears when you step on the brakes, this could mean you need new brake pads.

  5.  Rattling

Do you notice a rattling noise when you make a sharp turn? If yes, you should consider the possibility of a problem with the exhaust system, like a corroded exhaust pipe. If the rattling sound appears from the engine, this could indicate a failing water pump.

  6. Whining

If you detect a whining noise coming from your engine, it could indicate a worn-out component. If you ignore this, the parts could break down completely, causing extensive damage. So if you hear this particular noise, get an appointment with an auto repair shop.

  7.  Clunking

If your car makes clunking noises whenever you pass over a bump or speed breaker, this could indicate a problem with your struts. If you notice this sound, you should get professional help to take care of the worn out or damage struts.

    Auto Repair

Since we often get so accustomed to sitting in our car, we aren’t able to notice any unusual sounds. Getting another person to sit in your car is a good way to detect any weird car sounds, as they might point out.

Car repair and maintenance can be a huge expense and delaying any issues with your vehicle will only lead to further damage. If you detect any of the car sounds above, you should immediately take your car to a reliable auto repair shop.
